HAT: Chapter 4

"Uh… He saw it on the ground and returned it to me."

On the floor?

Do you think I'm a kid? Mimi, my dear~ tell me, how many gods did you pray to that achieved you this miracle? The senior on duty happened to see your name tag on the ground before you could arrive at the gates… What a miracle!

"Who'd believe that shit!" Patricia Thomas frowned. "Language." Amy chided softly. That soft reprimand, however, did nothing to shut Patricia up. If anything, it made her even more curious. As she followed Amy Rivers to the third floor of the junior high school building, she couldn't help but ask, "Fine, let's assume he really did find it somewhere; with how unbothered by nature he is, how would he know you're Amy Rivers?"

Amy Rivers asked back, "Am I not stunning enough?"

"Makes sense…." With that curly ginger hair, Amy River was a popular topic of discussion when she first came. Patricia Thomas, however, felt that it was strange no matter how she thought about it. Still, this friend of hers was usually so well-behaved it was pretty abnormal for her to display this blatant evasive attitude. Thus instead of asking too much, she chose to take it easy lest she coils back into her shell. "I was scared to death just now. When I saw Jeffery Howard wearing that armband, I thought you were finished."

Amy leaned against the handrail to catch her breath, "What extreme scenario is that brain of yours cooking up?"

Patricia threw her hands in the air in mock offence. "Extreme? Me? Sure, I'm a regular offender, but when have you ever broken a rule? That too on the first day? Then as if that was not shocking enough, we climax it by running into the jade prince, Jeffery Howard, who is on duty. When he grabbed you, I thought it was game over!"

Seeing their class ahead, Amy turned and shushed her before quickly walking in. For such an unfortunate start, the duo were quite lucky. They made it just in time for the attendance. Amy controlled her heavy breathing as best as possible and stood at the door, "Ma'am…."

Judit Hernandes Lomeli, their homeroom teacher, was a young female teacher in charge of teaching Spanish. Her attitude towards her students could be summarised into one word–mother. She was very understanding and sweet and got along well with all her students; however, she would not hesitate to discipline you when necessary.

Fortunately, Amy had always been an excellent student-her reputation as a student could even be said to be impeccable, along with her grades. It was actually entirely novel to see her at the door at this time. Amused, Ms. Judith didn't make things difficult for her, "Come on in."

The same could not be said for the regular offender Patricia.

Judit Hernandes Lomeli had a playful smile, "Isn't this our bubbly Pat? As punctual as ever."

"Ms. Judith," Patricia Thomas gave a charming smile, "Not fair~ "She pouted for good effect. "I clearly came with Mimi here; how can she go while I can't, hmm~. It's heartbreaking." She clutched her heart in one hand, then stretched the other toward Amy, faking offence. Then she turned her doe eyes at Ms. Judith, feigning hurt. "Ms. Judith, you can't treat me like this, I even came early today."

"Yes, you're right. Your argument is justified. Even the standard is to my liking." Judit Hernandes Lomeli raised her hand. "From today onwards, you can only be as late as your friend, or you'll stand at the back through the entire morning study session."

"Eh?" Patricia's heartbroken expression morphed into confusion while all students in class H burst into laughter.

"I have been so fair, what's the eh for? Get in." After saying this, she turned to the class with a stern face. "Little offenses like these are fine, but be good during the ceremony. If not, should the director catch you himself, I won't be able to wipe your ass— understood?" She threw a wink at them after that.

Everyone had a conniving expression on their face as they nodded.

While this exchange was going on, Amy Rivers had a puzzled look as she continued to stuff her sketchbooks under her table without success. After failing continuously for some time, she sent her hand and accidentally pulled out a pink box.

Oh?

"Ohoo~ Which knight was it this time? How chivalrous he even brought a courting gift on the opening day." Patricia whispered from her side of the table. "It's pretty nice to be pretty."

"It's not that…." Amy Rivers did not even know how to reply. She raised her head to look sneakily at her homeroom teacher before carefully unwrapping the box.

Inside was an exquisite professional artist paint brush set, 24-23 different shapes + mixing knife with an organizing case. There was even a card attached to it. She didn't touch the brushes and calmly opened the card to read before stuffing it back under her table.

The gossipy Patricia Thomas shuffled over, "Which class? That stuff looks expensive. He even knows you like drawing the most."

Amy pursed her lips, seemingly in deep thought.

"We'd have to go back home after the opening ceremony, right?"

"No, we'd probably have to go back to class for a while. Why?"

"I want to return the gift to the guy in class K."

The attendance had already been marked, so everyone in the class had stood up, heading towards the school's auditorium. Patricia Thomas couldn't understand Amy's obsession with returning gifts honestly in person. Especially when the said gift, for once, was something Amy really liked. "Mimi, are you being serious? You'll hurt the poor guy's feelings."

Amy Rivers had left home without breakfast today, so she was hungry at this moment. She opened her bag, took out the bread she had bought earlier, and ate a quarter of it in a single bite. Then she remembered Pat was talking to her, so she replied in a muffled tone, "If I don't return it, he'd misunderstand and think I accept. But I don't, so it's wrong to accept the gift. Besides, I'm only in my third year of middle school now. I shouldn't be dating."

Patricia looked at Amy and didn't know what to say. "Good heavens, why did you send down this obedient child to tourture me? Even I have changed boyfriends twice last semester. Does it make me bad in your eyes?"

Forget it. You are so innocent; how can you understand heartbreaks?
